8 Tips on How to Size Clothing for Someone Else

With holiday season just around the corner, many of us are starting to prepare our shopping lists. But if you’re buying for someone else, how do you choose the right size, especially if you’re trying to be sneaky?

We’ve put together 8 tips to help you out if you’re planning on buying our undies (or clothing in general) for someone else.

1) Buy a Gift Card Instead

Don’t want to risk getting something that doesn’t fit? You can always buy a gift card instead and let your loved one choose the size and style that appeals to them most. This is a great way to cut down on textile waste as well – if they choose it themselves, there’s less chance it’ll end up in a landfill or donation bin after only a handful of wears.

While getting someone a gift card may not seem as fun as buying a physical item, it’s the safest way to ensure they get something they actually need or want. Plus, digital gift cards are zero waste and can totally be bought last minute! No one will ever know 😉

2) What is their clothing size?

If you know their typical clothing size, this can be a good place to start when estimating their size of underwear. Keep in mind, however, that all brands have different sizing systems – a size Small is not the same for every brand. Depending on the garment you have in mind though, stretchy items always have a little wiggle room.

3) Measure Something They Own

Can you infer their measurements from a garment they already own? For example, can you covertly measure a fitted garment from their closet? The waistband of non-stretch pants is a good place to start – if you have a rough idea of their waist or hip measurement, you can estimate the rest. Do keep in mind where the pants fit on their body – it’ll only be the waist measurement if the pants sit on their actual waist (high-waisted pants, for example), otherwise you’ll be getting a rough high hip measurement.

4) Know your own Measurements

Are they a similar shape to you? Bigger? Smaller? Knowing your own measurements will help you estimate how theirs compare.

5) Measure Someone Else

If you know someone of a similar size and body type, you can always ask to take their measurements instead. This can help give you a general idea of your gift-recipient’s size.

6) Abandon Surprise and Just Measure Them

You don’t have to tell them exactly what you’re buying, so the element of surprise won’t be completely lost! It’s up to you to decide whether the surprise is worth the risk of getting stuck with something that doesn’t fit.

7) Read the Shop Policies

Look into a shop’s return or exchange policy before you buy.

At Juniper & Eve, because we specialize in intimate apparel, we don’t accept returns or exchanges on most of our products. The only exceptions are our chest binders, where correct fit can be tricky, yet very important.

Do read the fine print before you buy, lest you become the surprised one!

8) Ask For Help

When in doubt, the person who makes the clothing is your best resource when choosing a size. I’m always available via email if you have questions or need assistance.

Hope these help!

And Happy holidays!
